As most citizens around the world willingly (and temporarily) give up their civil liberties in the name of public health, we can’t help but wonder – what is the price for security? Not long ago, Eastern Europe was locked behind the Iron Curtain for four decades. National borders were sealed and mobility was contained for nearly 300 million citizens. Back then, the threat against which people had to be protected was not a virus but ideas. The governments wanted to stop thoughts of democracy and freedom from contaminating their citizens. A system of total control emerged.

This workshop is about sharing the lessons learned from the failed communist experiment. Indeed, the Corona quarantine is not the same as the communist one. Yet, it offers a timely opportunity to re-remember why we must remain vigilant to safeguard our freedom and democracy. At the same time, societies inclined towards collectivism have a lot to offer. They can teach us about the fine line between personal sacrifice and group benefit. Slovakia implemented quarantine measures very early-on, and as a result – has one of the lowest virus rates in Europe.
