Celebrating Mary in September: We Sing with Joy, O Mary
This September, we celebrate Mary’s birthday on the 8th, her name day on the 12th, and her feast day as Our Lady of Sorrows on the 15th. So this month is a good time to consider how truly blessed we are to have a unique intercessor in Mary.
God’s significant choice was to gift us with Jesus’ own mother. She is present to us in both her spirit and body. This she understands our struggles – physical and spiritual.
As she stood beneath Jesus’ cross, His final words to her were, “Woman, here is your son” (John, standing in for each of us). Then to John, Jesus said “Here is your mother” (Jn 19:26-27).
How comforting it can be for us to prayerfully repeat Mary’s name as we ask for her help. I can well understand why the following hymn was so treasured and often sung by my mother.
